How Do I Get My Medical Marijuana Card?

Have questions about getting your medical marijuana card in Montana? Not sure if you qualify for one in the first place? Ganja Goddess has all the answers.

You must have proof of at least one qualifying medical condition that is approved by the state for which your physician can recommend medical marijuana as treatment. The state website lists these as:

  • cancer, glaucoma, positive status for human immunodeficiency virus, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome when the condition or disease results in symptoms that seriously and adversely affect the patient’s health status;
  • cachexia or wasting syndrome;
  • severe chronic pain that is persistent pain of severe intensity that significantly interferes with daily activities as documented by the patient’s treating physician
  • intractable nausea or vomiting;
  • epilepsy or an intractable seizure disorder;
  • multiple sclerosis;
  • Crohn’s disease;
  • painful peripheral neuropathy;
  • a central nervous system disorder resulting in chronic, painful spasticity or muscle spasms;
  • admittance into hospice care in accordance with rules adopted by the department;
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder; or
  • any other medical condition or treatment for a medical condition approved by the legislature.

PLEASE NOTE: Other conditions that are not medically related may affect your ability to qualify, such as being convicted of a crime or having a previous DUI, not being a Montana resident, or being a minor. Please refer to the Cardholder FAQ on the state website for more information.

Please come prepared with

  • Medical records or similar verified physician’s papers documenting your qualifying condition
  • A Montana state ID
  • The Doctor’s Fee (this amount depends on your chosen doctor)

During your visit, the doctor will fill out your Physician Statement and send it home with you. You will need this for your next step, the online application.

Once you have your signed Physician Statement from the doctor, bring all your papers in to any of our locations. From there we will help guide you step by step through the online application process.

When you come see us, please be photo ready (no hats or sunglasses) and have:

  • Your Montana photo ID
  • Personal information such as your social security # and address
  • Physician statement signed by your chosen doctor
  • An email address you can access
  • A credit or debit card (not mandatory, but expedites the process)

From there we will start the online application with you. This process will likely take over 20 minutes, so please plan accordingly.

We will pay your state application fee of $30. You have the option of paying in-store with your debit or credit card (for faster turnaround) or having a check sent in for you.

Want to do the online application yourself? Simply follow the directions on the State Cardholder Page

After you’ve submitted your online application, you need to get your card in the mail before you can legally buy medical cannabis from us. Applications usually take about 3 weeks to process, but if it’s been over a month and you haven’t received your card, please contact the state at (406) 444-0596 for a status update.

Make sure to regularly check your email for updates on your application. If your application has been rejected, please contact us to help us guide you in the re-submission process.

Once you receive your card, bring it in to one of our locations, and you’re good to go! Make sure to keep the card on you at all times, especially when visiting the shop. We may ask to see your card at any time, and medicine cannot be purchased without it.

Can’t wait to see you!
